Most Fellows of colleges were expected to enter the Church and thus most took up a benefaction in mid life and then juggled the responsibilities of a parish elsewhere with tutoring or teaching duties in the college. Teaching duties were not onerous, however, and some professors never delivered a single lecture! Other professors at the time, such as Adam Sedgwick, Woodwardian Professor of Geology, took their duties very seriously (Desmond and Moore, 1991). For example, John Stevens Henslow, who became Darwin’s most significant mentor at Cambridge (Walters and Stow, 2001), was a Fellow of St John’s College, having achieved a high place in the mathematical honours list (and undergoing ordination into the Church of England in 1824).
Was she just an early love or were his troubled thoughts the sign of some youthful sowing of wild oats? Perhaps we will never know. The diary preceding this one is for 1823, so the first nine months of 1824 are unrecorded. In 1823 Fox was at Repton School and he records an existence where he had little schooling and a good deal of shooting and high-spirited activity. There is reference here also to “Fanny”, with references going as far back as to the diary of 1822. Many of the relevant entries are written in Greek, as if in code23 .
