The First Super Bowl The significance of 1966 was twofold. First, the team finally achieved the kind of success that had been expected of them when they first came to Kansas City and became what they always thought they were; the best team in the league. More importantly, the Chiefs were finally and forever taken to the hearts of Kansas City's fans. And when the Chiefs thumped Buffalo, 31-7, in the 1966 AFL Championship Game, they earned the right to play the NFL champion Green Bay Packers in the first-ever AFL-NFL World Championship Game (not yet officially called the Super Bowl) in Los Angeles, the initial step of the two leagues ultimate merger, which would occur in 1970.
A devastating playoff loss to the Raiders ended the 1968 season, but the Chiefs playersand Stram in particularfelt they had the kind of team needed to return to make a run at the Super Bowl. Jim Marsalis, the club's top draft pick in 1969, took over the left cornerback spot and immediately improved the secondary on an already strong defense. The Chiefs overcame several injuries throughout the 1969 season, specifically the one to Len Dawson's knee, and again challenged the Raiders for the Western Division title.
