I guess now I just don’t find it a useful question to ask. So it’s like a math teacher’s version of Pascal’s Wager. You’re going to have faith that they can do it. Right. That’s a nice way to put it. You have to go into class that first day with the deep belief that every student is going to learn a lot of great math that year. And if you don’t believe that, the kids will figure out that you’re not in it all the way, and they won’t come with you. But if you really do believe it, they’ll trust you.

So in doing that we are able to teach a number of skills and also encourage students to become more engaged citizens and participate in the process of being informed and effecting change. Because of the freedom teachers have, we are able to keep really great teachers here. They don’t want to teach at a regular public school where they’re given scripts and a pre-set curriculum that would bore them and bore the students silly and allow for no creativity. We still have the same accountability as regular public schools and our students have to take the same state tests, so you have to be sure to incorporate everything that the tests test.

I like to put things in their hands that they already have a sense of, that they already understand, and then use those things to teach them something new. They already know how a CD changer works, and if you can use that to show them how a protein is made in the ribosome, that’s great. So I tell stories and use analogies and objects. A lot of it is just using an engaging style. For me, that’s what works. I don’t think I have anything that I could write a book about, except for some of the specific things I’ve mentioned, but it’s just my style.
