His vow was in vain. He died an hour after being admitted. , members of Paul Kelly’s gang confronted Eastman’s men beneath the elevated trains at the intersection of Rivington and Allen streets. Approximately twenty-five gangsters shot it out until a large contingency of police officers were able to chase them from the corner. In the ensuing sweep, police raided Lollie Meyers’s apartment and found the trio who instigated the shootout in a back room. Meyers (who suffered two bullet wounds to the leg), Bernstein (who took a nonserious bullet wound to the cheek), and Lewis, as well as the Monk himself, were all arrested.

Counterfeiting was nothing new to this criminal pair. Back in 1903, they were importing bad money from Italy. They were careful to never actually touch the cash. That task was left for lesser gang members to handle in case arrests were made, which, of course, they were. In January of 1903, gang members Isadoro Crocervera, Salvatore Romano, Giuseppe Giallambardo, and Giuseppe De Priema were arrested with counterfeit money in Yonkers, New York. Morello and Lupo did not take the fall. The Secret Service had been trailing the Morello-Lupo gang for some time and was hoping that the arrest of the four gang members would lead to incriminating evidence against the leaders.

Once Lupo and Morello found out that their printer was under government protection, they offered a $2,500 bounty to the person who could tell them where he was being kept. Confident that he could put the counterfeiters away with Comito’s testimony, Flynn started rounding up the gang. The first two arrested were the guards from the stone house, Cina and Uncle Vincent, who although well armed, were captured without trouble at their apartment. Next they went to Morello’s apartment where they found the gang leader in bed with his son, Caloggero.
