She was nearly forty when Thomas was born. A daughter, Elizabeth, born on August 29, 1738, died soon after birth. There were no other children. A member of the established Church of England, Frances Cocke's father was a middle-class lawyer, possibly tracing his lineage back to the legal scholar Richard Cocke, who wrote English Law, or a Summary Survey of the Household of God Upon Earth in 1651. At thirty-seven, late in life for the time, she married the artisan Pain, who was beneath her social station.

My first published works on the eighteenth century stemmed from the interest John Pocock took in my earliest explorations into the relationship between religion and politics of the period. The fruits of this investigation became the subject of several articles on late-eighteenth-century radicalism as well as two book-length scholarly studies, one on Paine himself: Thomas Paine and the Religion of Nature.
